Course Objectives
Learning outcomes
The course concurs to realize the educational goals of the Degree Program by introducing the students to the main concepts of the audiovisual language, through the exploration of significant practices of the international film production.
Students progress will be evaluated according to their active participation in the classroom and group discussions, as well as their familiarity with the analytic vocabulary of cinema studies.
The course aims to provide students with an adequate knowledge on:
the outlines of the New International Cinema;
the common elements of the film movements under investigation (Nouvelle Vague, Free Cinema, US Avantgarde Cinema, New American Cinema, Neue Welle);
their peculiarities, both national and of individual movies.
The skills acquired in this class can be used to partecipate in the activities of the prestigious International Film Festivals of Venice and Pesaro, showcases of the most advanced current audiovisual production, as well as sites of precious opportunities to meet international scholars, experts, directors, actors, and other cinema professionals.
Attending students who have successfully passed the course examination are eligible to be accreditated for the above mentioned film festivals. The accreditation badge is valid for all screenings and related activities.

Teaching methods

discussion of the selected audiovisual materials (feature, experimental and documentary films) shown in class.
Course readings and discussions of the screened movies will develop the students’ skills in audiovisual analysis and research, as well as their facility with the pertinent terminology of cinema studies and the study of audiovisual texts.
The screenings are in the original language with Italian subtitles.
Assessment Methods
Assessment methodsAn oral examination in the form of an interview will assess whether thestudent has mastered the course content.Grades run from 18 through 30/30.Excellent (27-30/30) will be awarded to those students who achieve acomprehensive understanding of the course content and are able toarticulate a specific and original vision of their own, that reflects both asolid proficiency in the analytic vocabulary of cinema studies, as well asin the different cinematic movements and movies that were examined.Good(22-26/30) will be awarded to those students showing someknowledge of the course content, but who are unable to fully articulate asynthesis of all the materials, as well as fully develop a sophisticatedanalysis,and use a correct but not always appropriate analyticvocabularyof cinema studies.Satisfactory (18-21/30) will be awarded to those students showing a basicknowledge of the course content and a supeficial understanding of thedifferentcinematic movements and movies studied, as well as aninaccurateanalytic vocabulary of cinema studies.Insufficient(under18/30)willbeawardedtothosestudentsdemonstrating an insufficient grasp of the course content, an inaccurateanalytic vocabulary of cinema studies, a lack of profiency regarding thedifferent cinematic movements and movies examined, and an inability toanalyse them.
