Course Objectives

At the end of the course, students will: - have acquired the written and oral production and comprehension skills required for level B1 (know-how) - have acquired the metalinguistic skills required for level B1 (ability to explain) - have acquired the theoretical skills related to the four readings included in the program (see bibliography) - have acquired basic knowledge of subordinate syntactic structures from a theoretical and practical point of view - know how to translate simple texts

Course Prerequisites

To access the course, students must have acquired written and oral production and comprehension skills equivalent to level A2 of the CEFR. To take the oral exam for the course, students must have passed the Spanish Language exam (first year).

Teaching Methods

The course includes lectures, in which theoretical content will be addressed, and seminars, in which students are expected to participate actively. The language lab exercises, which are essential for achieving the language skills necessary to pass the final exam, involve constant interaction with students. For these reasons, attendance at both the course and the language lab exercises is strongly recommended.

Assessment Methods

EXAM The exam consists of a written part and an oral part. It will be possible to take the two parts of the exam in different sessions (always in this order: first written, then oral). The exam must be completed by the last session of the academic year 2025/2025 (January/February 2027). The written exam grade will remain valid until the last exam session of the 2025/2026 academic year (January/February 2027). WRITTEN PART The written exam consists of: 1) exercises on subordinate clauses (similar to those done in class during lessons and available on the Teams channel, in the FILES section of the course folder) 2) questions (open and closed) on the theoretical part (LETI) 3) Written production at level B1 4) B1 level written comprehension There will be a single exam grade. Exemption from point 2 is possible. The specific date and procedures for exemption will be communicated during the lessons and published on the TEAMS channel, in the FILE section, in the course folder. If the exemption is granted, the corresponding grade will remain valid until the last session of the 2025-2026 academic year. ORAL PART To be admitted to the oral exam, students must have passed the written part. The oral part will aim to assess, through a dialogue between the teacher, the reader, and the student: - the acquisition of a language level equivalent to B1 of the European Reference Framework - the acquisition of the syntactic structures and basic vocabulary covered in the lessons (all necessary materials will be made available during the year on the TEAMS channel) - the student's comprehension and linguistic processing skills based on the content of the books included in the program (see Reference texts - readings). PLEASE NOTE: the aim of the oral exam is to assess the student's language level. The readings are a starting point for conversation. It is not necessary to memorize names of characters, dates, or historical context: it is important to be able to 1) recount the story of the novel or short story in a manner acceptable for a B1 level; 2) express opinions on the events narrated or the characters; 3) identify, based on a passage provided by the instructor, the moment in the story of the novel; 4) more generally, be able to hold a conversation at a B1 level. In the FILES section of the TEAMS channel, students will find additional documents with practical information about the program, how to prepare, and how the exam will be conducted.

In particular, during the year, documents will be made available for further study of the syntactic structures and vocabulary required for the exam. The course aims to provide students with: - level B1 of the CEFR (in collaboration with the language department) and the metalinguistic skills associated with this level; - theoretical knowledge in four areas, corresponding to four scientific articles that students will be required to read for the exam (see reference texts): youth language, dictionary structure, language variety, types of grammar; -basic translation skills; - knowledge of the main characteristics of subordination.

PROGRAM VALIDITY The program is valid for the entire 2025/2026 academic year (until the January/February 2027 session). In order to record their final grade, students must have taken and passed all parts of the exam by the last session of the 2025-2026 academic year. If the exam is not completed by the last session of the current academic year, students must retake the entire exam in accordance with the procedures set out in the 2026/2027 academic year. NON-ATTENDING STUDENTS There is no difference in the program between attending and non-attending students: non-attending students must study the course content and skills independently, referring to the materials indicated in the bibliography and those made available on the Teams channel. TEACHER'S OFFICE HOURS Students are kindly requested not to use the TEAMS chat to send messages to the teacher and not to write to book an appointment. Information on the teacher's office hours is available on the Department website. Students are always invited to check for any changes to times or dates. Office hours are always to be understood as taking place in person or on the Teams channel, unless further information is provided on the same Teams channel. LANGUAGE LAB The language lab (level B1) is essential for practicing the language skills required to pass the exam: it is therefore very important to attend the lab to reach the level expected by the course.
