Course Objectives


EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES:
At the end of the course, students will have to know what the so-called market failures are and the other main causes of public intervention in the economy, the economic motivations underlying the regulation and protection of competition with particular regard to public utility sectors, what the main environmental regulation tools are, especially those tailored for climate policy, and understand the economic logic that regulates their functioning.

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING:

Students must be able to critically use the concepts learned in the course, knowing how to formalize and contextualize them in the real fields of political and scientific debate, in terms of regulation, sustainable development and management of the environment and natural resources.

Course Prerequisites


Students are required to know basic concepts and analytical tools of microeconomics.

Written exam (compulsory) and oral exam (optional).

Students attending classes could be asked to discuss projects and/or essays

Contents


The course consists of three modules.
1st module: understanding of the economic system and the main causes of public intervention in the economy;
2nd module: regulatory policies and its alternatives, antitrust legislation, public enterprise and the reasons for its existence;
3rd module: main interactions between economy and environment, regulatory policies necessary for the management of environmental variables.

Course Language


The course is in Italian but textbook and class material are available in English upon request. Moreover, the exam can be taken in English upon request.
