Syllabus

Course Objectives

Through qualitative and quantitative analyses, the course aims to broaden the student's knowledge on the geodynamics and seismogenesis of active regions. The geometric, kinematic and dynamic relationships between tectonic structures and earthquakes and the mechanics of the seismic deformation are analysed at both a local and regional scale. The methodological approach will be multidisciplinary and based on the integrated analysis of geological, structural, geophysical, seismological and geodetic data. The knowledge that will be acquired will be applied both in professional and research, basic and applied fields.

Bachelor in Earth Sciences

Teaching Methods

Lectures and classroom exercises, with individual and group activities.
Each student will be personally involved in all phases of the program and will be stimulated to develop a critical sense of what he learns.

Assessment Methods

The students' evaluation is organized in three individual partial tests (60%) and in a group work (30%), the latter with the realization of a MOVE project and a Power Point presentation.
Regular attendance and participation in the course activities will be evaluated at 10%.

Contents

CFU1. Seismotectonic setting of active and seismogenic regions in the world. Introduction to the concepts of seismotectonics and seismogenesis and elements of quantitative seismotectonics
CFU1. Kinematic analysis of active structures and strain and stress fields formal inversion.
CFU1. Use of 3D geological modeling software for the geometric and kinematic analysis of the earthquake / fault association, at various scales.
CFU1. Geodynamics and seismogenesis of subduction zones and of intra-plate continental regions.
CFU1. Geodynamic framework and structural, geophysical and seismological analysis of the seismotectonic provinces and of the Italian and peri-Mediterranean individual seismogenic structures.
CFU1. Construction of three-dimensional seismotectonic models, on a local scale (individual fault) or a regional scale (seismogenic province) with examples of analogic and numeric modelling.

Attendance is compulsory.
Students will have the opportunity to:
1) attend the following laboratories at Ud’A:
-Lab of Seismology and Geophysics for Seismotectonics and Territory;
-Lab of Structural Geology, Cartography and Geological Modeling;
2) do internships at other universities belonging to CRUST (Interuniversity Center for 3D seismotectonics with territorial applications) or at relevant Italian Research Centres (INGV, CNR etc);
3) do their master's thesis in the context of CRUST (https://www.crust.unich.it/avvisi/tesi-magistrale-crust).
The teacher will put all students in a position to complete the exam immediately after the end of the lessons. Partial checks will be carried out for this purpose.
