Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course aims to provide students with theoretical and practical tools to tackle product design in the field of sustainable mobility, developing advanced design skills and a critical awareness of environmental, social and technological issues.
In particular, the course aims to:
- introduce the principles of sustainable design applied to mobility;
- develop the ability to analyse emerging needs related to urban and regional transport;
- apply user-centred design and problem-solving methodologies to product design;
- design industrialisable products and systems for light mobility;
- integrate functional, ergonomic, aesthetic and symbolic aspects into the design;
- strengthen students' critical, creative and communication skills.

Course Prerequisites

In order to sustain the exam, it is necessary to have passed the Product Design 1 exam. Basic knowledge of the design process, technical drawing, and three-dimensional modelling is required.

Teaching Methods

The course is structured as a design workshop and includes:
- introductory lectures on topics, scenarios and case studies;
- seminars and contributions from experts on the topic of sustainable mobility;
- individual or small group design exercises;
- collective and individual reviews during the course;
- physical prototyping and formal experimentation activities.

Assessment Methods

The course includes two ongoing assessments with marks: 1st relating to the individual product brief exercise; 2nd relating to the individual product concept exercise.
The examination session consists of the presentation of the results of the final phase of the project relating to product concept development and a critical discussion of the overall results of the design experience (brief, concept, concept development).

Contents

The course addresses the theme of sustainable and slow mobility as a strategic area of innovation for contemporary product design. In response to the need to reduce pollution, urban traffic and energy consumption, the workshop explores the design of products, accessories and micro-infrastructures for light, electrified mobility focused on people's well-being.
The course focuses on the development of industrialisable product concepts related to micro-mobility (bicycles, e-bikes, scooters, light cargo bikes), accessories and technical clothing for urban mobility, as well as solutions for physical and digital infrastructure (smart lighting, signage, charging systems, street furniture). Particular attention is paid to user experience, safety, environmental sustainability and the relationship between product, user and territorial context. The Product Design 2 course provides advanced training in product design, introducing students to the theoretical and operational knowledge of Human Centred Design, ergonomics and problem solving applied to design for product innovation.
