Syllabus

Course Objectives


The course aims to analyze the etiology of problems related to dental malocclusion and its correlation with dysfunctions of swallowing and muscular-facial muscle imbalances.


Course Prerequisites


No prerequisites are requested.

Teaching Methods


The course of Odontostomatological Diseases is organized in lectures during which the teacher makes use of power point / keynote presentations. Seminar activities will also be organized for all the students, aimed to improve and expand the student's knowledge on odontostomatological diseases.

Assessment Methods


To pass the oral exam the student must obtain a grade of not less than 18/30 in each module.The student must demonstrate that she/he has acquired sufficient knowledge of the topics covered during the course.


To achieve a score of 30/30 cum laude the student must instead demonstrate that she/he has acquired excellent knowledge of all the topics covered during the course, arguing a linear reasoning with the use of technical terms and making use of correct linguistic expressions.

The course aims at the knowledge of odontostomatological diseases and in particular of all those malocclusions due to incorrect swallowing. During it there will be treated the prenatal and post-natal causes of malocclusions, paying particular attention to the correlation with the lingual posture, functional disorders, oral respiration, phonation disorders, atypical deglutition, muscular abnormalities and finally the spoiled habits. It will also be discussed the objective of the diagnosis in functional orthopedic -orthodontics and the importance of intercepting problems at an early age and identifying a priority of intervention. Within the course will be treated the importance of collaboration with other professionals (pediatrician, speech therapist, otolaryngologist, physiotherapist, physiatrist, etc.)
