Course Objectives

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
The course is inserted within the specific objectives of the study program aimed at training a professional figure able to: i) ensure the safe administration of the therapy and monitor its effectiveness and the side effects and adverse events; ii) integrate nursing care into the multidisciplinary care project; iii) work in an integrated way in the team respecting the areas of competence.
Therefore, in short, the course aims to allow the student to develop knowledge and skills on the pharmacological basis of the therapy through an integration of related notions: the pharmacokinetics, the mechanism of molecular action and the interaction of individual classes of drugs with the pathophysiological and molecular mechanisms of the diseases for which these drugs are proposed, as well as the methods of drug administration and the unwanted side effects.
EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES
At the end of the course the student, as far as he is competent, will be able: i) to know the pharmacological basis of the therapy; ii) to know the side and toxic effects of drugs and the potential interactions between them; iii) to understand the biological reasons behind the variability of drug response.
The course will help to provide the student with tools that will allow him to improve: i) his competence in the management of drug therapy; ii) his ability to relate with other professional figures (medical doctors, psychologists, dietitians, etc.) who, in an increasingly multidisciplinary approach, will be called to take care of the patient.
The student will also be able to provide explanations to the patient and / or his family about the benefits and risks of drug therapy. Finally, the student will develop skills useful for an independent study and will acquire the methodological tools for an autonomous update.

Course Prerequisites

The student must have basic knowledge of biology, biochemistry, anatomy and physiology.

Teaching Methods

The teaching is divided into lectures whose purpose is to transmit concepts, information and schemes.

Assessment Methods

EVALUATION METHOD

Type of exam:
oral

The evaluation method consists of oral examination and the topics under examination will reflect those discussed during the lessons and present in the program.
At least one question will focus on topics of general pharmacology, one on topics of special pharmacology and one on topics of pharmaceutical botany.
The evaluation will be based on the knowledge of the topics covered by the exam questions and the student's logical-argumentative skills. For the purposes of the evaluation, the quality of the oral presentation will also be taken into consideration with particular reference to the competence in the use of the specialized lexicon.
If the teacher is not able to be present a test of 15 multiple choice questions (only one right) will be administered to the students.
The final grade is calculated as the average of the individual modules that, together with that of Pharmacology and Pharmaceutical Botany, are included in the integrated course.

The examination procedure and its evaluation are indicated by the teacher at the beginning of the lessons.

Evaluation:
Rating in thirtieths

Contents

The course includes two sections:
1) General pharmacology: this section describes the principles that underlie the human-drug interactions and that in turn are divided into two chapters, one related to Pharmacokinetics (the effects that the body has on drugs) and the other one on Pharmacodynamics (the cellular and molecular mechanisms that underlie the therapeutic, unwanted and toxic effects of drugs).
2) Special Pharmacology and therapy: this section describes the characteristics of the single classes of drugs (in particular those of the most common use in hospital settings).
