Course Objectives

The teaching, in compliance with the provisions of the Didactic Regulations in article no. 3 ‘Specific educational objectives and expected competences’, aims to provide the knowledge to plan and manage nursing care, in the surgical area, with respect to: the importance of perioperative safety, the three phases of the perioperative period, the different types of surgical interventions. EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES: The teaching, in accordance with the provisions of the Knowledge and understanding understand the need/problem of the person undergoing surgery in the pre-intra-postoperative phases; formulate individual care plans aimed at recovering and/or maintaining the highest level of autonomy compatible with the disease; appropriately interpret the clinical case by listing and explaining the peculiarities and the specific interventions to be applied in each situation; know the risk factors related to the complications of surgery and the measures and tools to prevent adverse events Ability to apply knowledge and understanding to apply the planned nursing interventions adapting them to the person according to guidelines, protocols, defined procedures and safety criteria; to apply in an effective and safe way the technical procedures, in support of the therapeutic pathways, conforming to the professional standards of quality; to plan the nursing care and to evaluate its outcomes also making use of the cooperation and collaboration of the assisted person, his/her family members and the interprofessional team. Making judgements: to be able to formulate one's own evaluation and to take initiatives and decisions in the context of perioperative monitoring in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team; to decide which interventions to plan in response to the requirements of effectiveness, safety, conformity to quality standards and in coherence with scientific evidence; to autonomously identify informative and educational interventions for the assisted person and the family aimed at self-identifying signs and symptoms of complications and at preventing or reducing the undesired effects of treatments Communications skills be able to represent possible critical issues and solutions and communicate one's own conclusions, appropriately choosing the most suitable medium and form of communication, in relation to the interlocutors and contexts. Learning skills: develop independent study skills; demonstrate the ability to cultivate doubts and tolerate uncertainties arising from study and practice, asking appropriate and relevant questions to resolve them; demonstrate the ability to seek out opportunities for self-study; demonstrate ability to self-assess one's own skills and outline one's own development and learning needs demonstrate capacity for collaborative learning and knowledge sharing within the work team; demonstrate capacity and autonomy to seek information needed to solve problems or uncertainties in professional practice by critically selecting secondary and primary sources of research evidence.


Course Prerequisites

Knowledge related to biomedical sciences for the understanding of physiological processes connected to the state of health and illness of the person; knowledge related to the scientific methodology of Problem Solving and Process Nursing for the planning of care interventions aimed at the management of the person with internist pathologies. In order to be admitted to the examination, students must have attended 70% of the frontal lectures of the Integrated Course in Nursing in the Medical and Surgical Area and must have passed the examinations of the first year of the course, as foreseen by the study plan.


Teaching Methods

The module, attendance of which is compulsory, includes interactive face-to-face lectures with the aid of supporting computer-based teaching material in Power Point format. The lecturer will adopt a teaching style based on the presentation of problems prefiguring professional life situations, so as to stimulate students' interest in the course topics.


Assessment Methods

The learning assessment is based on an oral test. The assessment is in thirtieths; the examination is passed if the mark is equal to or higher than eighteen thirtieths (18/30). In determining the order in which students are to be examined, special account will be taken of the specific needs of working students. Failure marks are not accompanied by a mark. The publicity of the examination papers is ensured. The following indicators and descriptors will be taken into account for the assessment of the oral interview: INDICATORS: Relevance and correctness DESCRIPTORS: Complete: 30, Thorough: 29 - 27, Fair with some gaps 26 - 24, Fully sufficient: 23 - 21, Scarcely sufficient with obvious shortcomings: 20 - 18 INDICATORS: breadth and coherence DESCRIPTORS: Rigorous and documented showing ability to use acquired knowledge and to link it in the argument: 30, Precise and detailed: 29 - 27, Adequate: 26 - 24, Fully sufficient: 23 - 21, Barely sufficient: 20 - 18 INDICATORS: Correctness of expression, ownership of scientific language, communication skills DESCRIPTORS: Refined and original: 30, Clear, fluent and correct: 29 -27, Fair: 26 - 24, Sufficient: 23 - 21, Not fully adequate: 20 -18. A mark of no less than 18/30 is required to pass the examination. To obtain a mark of 30/30 cum laude, the student must demonstrate excellent knowledge of all the topics covered in the course, being able to link them in a logical and coherent manner.
