Course Objectives


Training objectivesThe teaching contributes to the realization of the educational objective ofthe School of Medicine by providing students with knowledge about signsand symptoms, diagnostic procedures, and therapeutic indications inkidney diseases.Expected learning outcomesAt the end of teaching the students will be able to:a) with reference to the symptom-signs proteinuria, haematuria, oliguria,polyuria, and peripheral edema:to illustrate the single pathophysiological mechanisms;to list the clinical significance and the main causes;to plan a correct diagnostic procedure.b) To interpret in a physiological and diagnostic key the possible resuls ofthe urine test.c) To specify indications and controindications, complications, costs,reliability of the main specialized diagnostic procedures:- renal function test- urine colture- renal biopsy- diagnostic imaging- laboratory parameters.d) With reference to the systematic nosography:- To know, on the basis of epidemiological information, which are themost frequent pathologies affecting the urinary system.- To differentiate and interpret the pathophysiological elements of clinicalsemeiology in order to correctly frame the pathogenesis.- To specify the pathogenic role of the main risk factors.- To be able to analyze clinical and instrumental data to make a correctdiagnosis and set up a therapeutic schema

Course Prerequisites


general concepts of physiology of the genitourinary system;- general concepts of imaging of the genitourinary system;- general notions regarding inflammatory, infectious, and immunologicalprocesses.

Classroom lessons for all studentsExercises in small groups during the frequency of the NephrologyDepartment.

It is proposed to provide students with adeguate knowledge concerning:1) Diagnostic use of signs and nephro-urological symptoms interpreted inrelation to their physiopathogenesis.2) Pathophysiological, laboratory and instrumental diagnostic procedures,and their indications in nephrology disorders.3) Systematic nosology of the main nephrological diseases.4) Basic concepts concerning the criteria and indications of renalreplacement therapy.5) Essential concepts concerning therapeutic indications in the pathologyof the nephropatic patient.

Students are received at the Department of Nephrology Clinic, preferablyon Tuesday and Thursday (h 12-13).Optional activities are the following elective activities:- Current events and perspectives in renal replacement therapy (Prof.Mario Bonomini)The activity aims to provide an update on the current status and on theprospects also experimental in artificial replacement therapy (dialysis)and natural (transplant) of chronic uremia.- Multidisciplinarity of therapeutic apheresis techniques (Dr. VittorioSirolli)The activity aims to provide an in depth analysis of the various aphereticmethods currently available to us and the therapeutic indications for theircorrect use.
