Course Objectives


Course Objectives:

Students will be able to demonstrate foundational knowledge of infectious diseases.
Students will be able to explain the distinctions between colonization and infection.


To introduce topics related to the prevention of infectious diseases, the proper use of antibiotics, and the reduction of HIV/AIDS cases.
Students will be able to explain the fundamentals of infectious diseases and evaluate their significance within community and healthcare settings.
To provide students with knowledge of the causes, diagnosis, prevention strategies, and treatments of major infectious diseases, with particular focus on their etiopathogenesis, epidemiology, clinical features, and the different classes of drugs used (antibiotics, antivirals, antifungals, antiparasitics).

Knowledge and Understanding:
The student must demonstrate knowledge of the epidemiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis, differential diagnosis, clinical presentation, treatment, and prophylaxis of major infectious diseases. They should be able to engage in complex discussions concerning infectious clinical issues. The course aims to equip students with the foundational knowledge and methodological tools necessary to analyze and address infectious diseases.
Applying Knowledge and Understanding:
The student must demonstrate the ability to address and solve problems related to infectious diseases and to implement an appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic process starting from clinical presentation. The training is designed to impart practical skills for the effective application of acquired knowledge and to promote proficiency in utilizing methodological tools.
Autonomy of Judgment:
The student should be capable of independently recognizing clinical presentations and implementing an appropriate and correct diagnostic-therapeutic approach. Adequate tools will be provided to enable students to achieve these goals.
Communication Skills:
The student must be able to explain basic concepts related to infectious diseases to non-experts. They should be able to present a paper (e.g., during exams or coursework) or summarize results comprehensively yet concisely, using appropriate technical language. Students are encouraged to clearly and rigorously develop various topics, pay attention to the formal presentation of studied methods, familiarize themselves with discipline-specific terminology, and convey principles, content, and practical applications accurately and simply to lay audiences.
Learning Ability:
The student must be capable of independently updating and expanding their knowledge by consulting relevant texts and scientific articles. They should progressively develop the ability to follow specialized seminars, conferences, masterclasses, and other academic events related to the discipline.

Assessment Methods


The checking of the students' knowledge will made with an oral exam and the final mark will be expressed in thirtieths.

The final mark will be awarded according to the following assessments:

From 18 to 22 if the student's knowledge of the required topics is sufficient;

From 23 to 26 if the student proves to have mastery about the main topics of the exam;

From 27 to 29 if the student proves to have a good knowledge of the topics the exam and manages to range between the various topics in the program, developed in order to bring students to reflect on the problems of the discipline.

30 and 30 with honors if the student proves to have an excellent knowledge of the topics required, a good use of medical terminology, and a clear and concise presentation that allows to understand the logical connections between the different aspects considered.
