Course Objectives


LEARNING OBJECTIVES


The teaching of Clinical Pathology contributes to the achievement of the educational objectives of the Course of Dietistic, consistent with professional profile of the Educational Regulation.
In particular, the teaching is part of the biomedical and clinical disciplines aimed at providing the student with the knowledge and skills necessary to operate, in collaboration with other healthcare professionals, in prevention, nutritional assessment and management of physiological and pathological conditions of the individual and the community.
EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES
Knowledge and Understanding
The student should be able to:
• Know the fundamental principles of clinical pathology and their role in assessing health and disease.
• Understand the pathophysiological significance of the main laboratory tests (hematological, biochemical, immunological, and microbiological) of nutritional interest.
• Know the main laboratory alterations associated with metabolic, inflammatory, endocrine, infectious, gastrointestinal, and neoplastic diseases, relevant for dietary assessment and intervention.

Ability to apply knowledge and understanding
The student will be able to:
• Interpret the main laboratory parameters useful for assessing a patient's nutritional and metabolic status.
• Correlate laboratory data with the individual's clinical, anthropometric, and dietary profile.
• Use laboratory information to collaborate in the development and monitoring of nutritional plans, both preventive and clinical, in accordance with professional competencies.

Making Independent Judgments
The student will be able to:
• Critically evaluate laboratory data relevant to nutritional intervention.
• Identify clinical situations requiring further diagnostic investigations or consultation with the physician and other healthcare professionals.
• Contribute, with competence and responsibility, to the process.
Communication Skills
The student will be able to:
• Communicate effectively with other healthcare professionals using appropriate clinical and laboratory language.
• Explain to patients, clearly and comprehensibly, the general meaning of laboratory tests and their relationship to nutritional status and dietary management.
Learning Ability
The student will be able to:
• Independently update their knowledge of clinical pathology as applied to dietetics.
• Integrate new scientific evidence and guidelines into professional practice to improve the quality of nutritional care.




Course Prerequisites


Mandatory prerequisites provided for by the Degree Course.
Solid knowledge of: Anatomy, Histology, Biochemistry, Physiology and Microbiology.

Teaching Methods


The course will be carried out through interactive lectures with the aid of iconographic material in Power Point files. Theoretical knowledge will be acquired through attendance at lessons, integrated with the study of recommended texts, handouts and material provided by the teacher, uploaded to the FAD platform and available for consultation via the link relating to the course.

Assessment Methods


The assessment method consists of an oral exam.
The evaluation is expressed in thirtieths, the exam is passed if the evaluation is equal or superior to eighteen/thirty (18/30).
In determining the order in which the students are to be examined, the specific needs of working students will be specifically considered.

The assessment of insufficiency is not accompanied by a vote.
Praise may be granted unanimously, if the final grade is thirty.

The publicity of the exams is assured and the communication of the final result of the test and its evaluation are published.


For the evaluation of the oral exam, the following assessment schedule will be considered:

To pass the exam you must obtain a grade of not less than 18/30.

To achieve a score of 30/30 cum laude, the student must demonstrate that he has acquired excellent knowledge of all the topics covered during the course, being able to link them in a logical and coherent way.

It is recalled, in fact, that the use of the recommended Clinical Pathology book is essential for a correct, useful and easier preparation of the subject. Students are required to perform all the topics indicated in the program even if not included in the teaching material.

Contents


The lessons taught during the course will cover the following topics:
1. General medical laboratory tests
2. The laboratory in diabetes mellitus
3. Serum proteins: diagnostic and prognostic significance in different clinical contexts
4. Complete blood count. The laboratory in the diagnostic evaluation of anemia
5. First-level laboratory tests for the evaluation of liver function
6. Laboratory tests for the evaluation of renal function.
