Syllabus

Course Objectives

- Theoretical Knowledge

Understand the structure, function, and pathophysiology of the respiratory system.

Acquire knowledge of the main respiratory diseases, including diagnostic techniques and therapeutic options.

- Knowledge and Understanding

Deepen understanding of acute and chronic respiratory failure.

Analyze the role of nutrition in managing respiratory diseases, including obstructive and oncological conditions.

- Judgment Autonomy

Develop the ability to evaluate respiratory symptoms and clinical signs to plan targeted dietary interventions.

Identify personalized therapeutic strategies to improve patients' quality of life.

- Clinical-Nutritional Skills

Integrate knowledge of nutritional management for patients with respiratory failure or lung neoplasms.

Design specific nutritional interventions tailored to various respiratory conditions.

- Communication Skills

Communicate effectively with the multidisciplinary healthcare team.

Educate patients on the importance of balanced nutrition to enhance the management of respiratory diseases.

Teaching Methods

Frontal Lectures

Assessment Methods

The learning outcomes will be assessed through a final oral examination aimed at verifying the achievement of the educational objectives. The evaluation criteria will include:

Correct use of technical-scientific language.

Knowledge and mastery of the subject matter.

Clarity of presentation and the ability to synthesize and critically analyze respiratory diseases.

The final grade will be expressed on a 30-point scale. To pass the exam, the student must demonstrate an adequate understanding of the content and critical reasoning skills.

The evaluation will be divided as follows:

Basic but incomplete knowledge: grade 18-22/30.

Adequate knowledge and clear presentation: grade 23-25/30.

Good knowledge and ability to discuss topics with proper language and mastery of the subject: grade 26-28/30.

Excellent knowledge of topics, excellent presentation skills, and critical reasoning: grade 28-30/30.

Honors will be awarded to students who demonstrate a thorough understanding of the course material, excellent presentation skills, and exceptional critical reasoning ability.

During the course, the instructors will provide a list of selected articles and monographs as essential reference materials for an in-depth understanding of the syllabus. The slides used during the lessons will be shared as a supplementary teaching resource.

- Overview of Respiratory System Anatomy and Physiology:

Structure and function of the respiratory system: upper and lower airways, alveoli, respiratory muscles.

Pulmonary circulation and its interaction with cardiac function.

- General Overview of Respiratory Diseases:

Main symptoms: cough, dyspnea, chest pain, hemoptysis, syncope.

Imaging diagnostics: chest X-ray, chest CT.

Arterial blood gas analysis: parameters and clinical interpretation.

- Infectious Diseases:
Epidemiological aspects and cardiorespiratory pathology.

- Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and Respiratory Failure:

Pathophysiological mechanisms of COPD.

Nutritional management of patients with COPD: energy balance, protein-energy malnutrition, and supplementation.

Acute and chronic respiratory failure: definition, causes, management.

- Bronchial Asthma:

Pathophysiology and symptoms of asthma.

Nutrition and symptom control: impact of obesity and the role of antioxidants.

- Lung Cancer and Nutritional Strategies:

Classification and clinical-therapeutic approach to lung cancer.

Nutritional support in oncological patients: management of cachexia and personalized dietary interventions.
