Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course aims to provide the student with the key to understand from a physical, chemical and biological point of view the main metabolic processes that take place within our body, including the processes that lead to the detoxification of drugs and harmful compounds deriving from environmental pollution. In doing this, the course will emphasize the relationships between structure and function of the main classes of biological molecules, metabolic regulation and the molecular and cellular level, identifying the connection between the various processes and organs and emphasizing the evolutionary aspect of biochemical processes. The main experimental methods used in a modern biochemistry laboratory will also be introduced.
Communication skills: at the end of the course, the student must be able to use the technical language of Biochemistry in the cultural and scientific context of competence.

Course Prerequisites

The main prerequisites are the knowledge of the basics of mathematics and physics for the understanding of mathematical functions and for the relative graphic interpretation of the same; Knowledge of the basics of organic chemistry: organic compounds; main organic functions and relative chemical reactivity;
Prerequisites: General Chemistry

Teaching Methods

Frontal lessons in the classroom

Assessment Methods

Oral exam: questions related to the treatment of several topics which require the interpretation of graphs of various kinds and representation of chemical structures of biomolecules involved in metabolic pathways. Questions related to the description of the operating principles of analytical techniques in the biochemical laboratory and their use for the study of biomolecules in contexts of cell contamination and detoxification.
