Syllabus

Course Objectives


The course provides students with the theoretical background and practical skills required for the quantitative analysis of pharmaceutical substances and dosage forms.
Particular emphasis is placed on volumetric and instrumental analytical methods described in the Italian Official Pharmacopoeia and the European Pharmacopoeia, as well as on laboratory skills relevant to pharmaceutical quality control.
At the end of the course, students will be able to:

understand the theoretical principles underlying quantitative analytical methods;
select the most appropriate analytical procedure according to the characteristics of the analyte and the sample matrix;
perform volumetric and instrumental analyses relevant to pharmaceutical applications;
interpret analytical data, titration curves and experimental results;
evaluate accuracy, precision and potential sources of analytical error;

work safely in an analytical laboratory according to good laboratory practices.


Course Prerequisites


Students are expected to have a basic knowledge of general and analytical chemistry, and fundamental laboratory techniques.
The student has to know chemical equilibria, pH and solubility calculations, and redox reactions.


Teaching Methods


The course includes:

40 hours of classroom lectures covering the theoretical principles of pharmaceutical quantitative analysis;
12 hours of numerical exercises aimed at applying theoretical concepts and solving analytical problems;
36 hours of laboratory sessions focused on the practical execution of official analytical methods and on the processing of experimental data.

Teaching activities are designed to integrate theoretical knowledge with practical laboratory skills, with particular emphasis on pharmaceutical applications.


Assessment Methods

Student assessment consists of a written examination and an oral examination.
The written examination includes numerical exercises and analytical problems aimed at evaluating the student's ability to apply quantitative analytical methods and process experimental data.
The oral examination assesses:

knowledge and understanding of analytical principles;
ability to interpret analytical results critically;
proper use of scientific terminology;
ability to relate theoretical concepts to pharmaceutical applications.

Students obtaining a grade of at least 18/30 in the written examination are admitted to the oral examination.
Intermediate tests may be scheduled during the course according to the procedures communicated by the lecturer at the beginning of the academic term.
Practical laboratory skills acquired during the course contribute to the overall assessment.
