Course Objectives


In line with the aims of the Bachelor Degree in Studi in Mediazione linguistica e comunicazione interculturale, this course seeks to examine the most recent developments in theoretical debate on translation, with a special focus on new technologies and the critical evaluation of the quality of a translation. In particular, it seeks to provide the methodological foundations for the concrete use of new technologies in support of translation, with specific reference to the interrogation of corpora and the use of artificial intelligence.


EXPECTED KNOWLEDGE OUTCOMES
This course aims at providing the teoretical and methodological tools that are useful for working as a translator of different text types, in light of the main translations approaches and the most recent technological innovations.



KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITY TO UNDERSTAND
Knowledge and understanding of main approaches in translation, of general linguistics and text linguistics applied to translation, of the basic principles in corpus linguistics, and of new technologies usable in translation.


ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
To be able to analyse translations on the basis of the text type, of genre, and of the recipient. To be able to use some digital tools in support of translation work. To be able to critically assess the role of corpora and generative artificial intelligence.


AUTONOMY OF JUDGEMENT
To be able to reflect critically on the different approaches to translation and on the use of some digital tools for translation, even in view of critically assessing the quality of a translated text.


COMMUNICATION ABILITIES
To be able to describe the main approaches to translation illustrated during the course. To be able to develop rich and exhaustive in support of the analysis of teh quality of a translated text.

Course Prerequisites


Basic notions of general linguistics, text linguistics and IT.

Assessment Methods


Assessment will take place through a written exam. Only those passing the written exam will be able to sit the oral exam. Unless otherwise specified, both exams will take place on the same day and will be marked out of 30. The exam seeks to ascertain the preparation of the students on the contents of the course, both on the theoretical and on the methodological and practical level. The discussion on the pratical sessions during the course will be integral part of the final assessment.

Contents


The course seeks to provide an introduction to translation science, the discipline that studies the theoretical and practical aspects of translation. Special attention will be given to the relationship between translation practiced and new technologies, also with reference to generative artificial intelligence. During the course, the students will be guided in practice sessions of traslation and evaluation of the quality of a translation.
