Course Objectives

Provide the tools needed to frame in detail the themes related to the development of the Italic peoples and to address specific aspects of their material culture, examining in depth the aspects characterizing the Middle-Adriatic cultures for the understanding of the history of the territory between Marche and Abruzzo

Teaching Methods

The course is organized in two teaching modules of 3 CFU each, for a total of 6 credits and an in-depth module of 3 in which reports and educational visits will be carried out

Assessment Methods

Oral exam, which includes three questions; one of which may focus on the report work carried out in the classroom for the attending students

Tools and sources for the study of the peoples of ancient Italy since the Final Bronze Age to the beginning of Romanization (10th-3rd century BC), with specific attention to the central area of the peninsula.
The ethne of pre-Roman Italy as recorded by the ancient authors: themes related to the origin and development.
The impact of Greek and Phoenician colonization on the development of the populations of ancient Italy;
The languages of pre-Roman Italy: diffusion, nature and relationships with the peoples’ distribution;
The distinctive characteristics of material culture between the archaeological record and ideological forms.
- Forms of population;
- Funerary rituals;
- Production and material culture.

Focus on the populations of Apennine Italy:
- Umbrians;
- Picenes;
- Equi, Equicoli, Volsci;
- Peoples of pre-Roman Abruzzo;
- Samnites
