Contents

The extraordinary moment that the Papacy has experienced in its recent past (papal abdication, two Popes, three papal canonizations, three Jubilees) is the premise for investigating the problem of papal representation which since its origins has constituted a complex issue due to the numerous ecclesiological implications that it implies.
The starting point for analysis will be the image of the “pope commissioner” depicted on the apses of some of the major Roman basilicas, and subsequently the ‘realistic portraits’ of the papal recumbent effigies (gisants) of the 13th century. Particular attention will be given to the programmatic campaign for images created by Boniface VIII (1294-1303) and to the transformations the papal self-representations underwent during the Avignon papacy (1308-1378) and during the Great Western Schism, when the concurrent presence of two and, at a later point, three schismatic popes laid the foundation for the collation of the manuscript prophecies concerning the papacy known as the Vaticinia Pontificum. The course will conclude by examining the papacy of Martin V (1417-1431) which paved the way for Humanism, following the demands for renewal set out by the Council of Constance of 1417 and the requests for the recovery of the Roman “essence” of the papacy.
These great themes are also read through the lens of artistic creativity, particularly cinematographic (P. Sorrentino The Young Pope, W. Wenders A Man of His Word etc.), which allows, like current history, to reflect on how the Pope is the most important legacy that the Middle Ages have transmitted to the contemporary age.
