Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course aims to provide students with a foundational education and understanding of the language of materials in various design applications. Starting with the history of materials (from traditional to more recent), their main technical, mechanical, and manufacturing properties are described, as well as their perceptual-sensorial and symbolic-communicative qualities. This course addresses the complex issue of informed design choices, using new selection criteria and innovative online research tools. Upon completion of the course, students will be able to recognize both the technical and perceptual-sensorial properties of materials, as well as the most advanced technologies and production processes, with a particular focus on selecting the most suitable materials for a project. Furthermore, they will be able to conduct research on design materials by consulting material libraries.

Course Prerequisites

None

Teaching Methods

The course is organized with ex cathedra lectures, ongoing individual exercises, and group discussions on the exercises.

Assessment Methods

The course includes several mandatory assessments and final evaluations:
- two ongoing exercises
- one extempore exercise on the topics covered
- final exam, with a critical discussion of the results achieved.
The grades of the ongoing exercises and the extempore exercises contribute to the arithmetic average for the final exam evaluation.
The individual exam consists of a critical discussion of the topics covered and the results achieved from the ongoing assessments.

Contents

The course contributes to the education of students in the Design program through knowledge of materials, technologies, and their applications in various industrial product sectors. Specifically, the first part of the course explores the expressive/sensorial characteristics of materials, exploring new aesthetic and meaning qualities, consciously selecting and classifying materials for design, and their application in design, including aesthetic, finishing, and multisensory aspects. The second part, using a technical and technological approach, explores the characteristics of various classes of more conventional materials (wood, metal, plastic, glass, ceramic), processing techniques, and production processes.
