Course Objectives


The "Business and Innovation" course contributes to the achievement of the learning objectives of the degree program by providing the tools needed to understand the theories and models related to the economics of innovation. Knowledge in this area is essential for understanding the innovation dynamics that underpin the success of firms. This understanding is a key requirement for enhancing the ability to grasp innovation processes and for developing new product, service, or process ideas—skills expected from future experts in Economics and Behavioral Sciences.

EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES
- Knowledge and understanding:
By the end of the course, students are expected to have acquired: a sound understanding of innovation processes and the strategic and organizational logic behind them; the ability to analyze technological evolution in industrial sectors; conceptual and analytical knowledge of economic disciplines; an understanding of the main drivers of economic growth, particularly innovation; and insight into the dynamic nature of the business environment.

- Ability to apply knowledge and understanding:
Students will develop the ability to: apply tools to analyze innovation scenarios and design entrepreneurial initiatives; use project management tools to plan, execute, and evaluate innovation projects; design solutions to general decision-making problems; interpret the generative mechanisms of innovation processes; and apply methodologies for strategic planning.

- Independent Evaluative Judgement:
By the end of the course, students should be able to: critically assess business decisions in contexts of uncertainty and technological change; identify challenges and opportunities within innovation processes; develop synthesis skills, critical thinking, and logical argumentation; and evaluate scenarios and alternatives within decision-making systems.

- Communication skills:
Students will be able to: appropriately use technical language in the fields of economics and innovation management; present projects and strategies to both specialist and non-specialist audiences; clearly communicate scientific topics to diverse audiences; and correctly apply economic terminology.

- Ability to learn:
By the end of the course, students are expected to: develop the ability for continuous learning regarding innovation practices and project management models; independently deepen the course topics; conduct research using scientific and professional sources; and design and implement action-research interventions.

Course Prerequisites


Successful participation in the course requires logical and reasoning skills, as well as basic knowledge of business economics.

Teaching Methods


The course is structured in 48 hours of frontal teaching, divided into 2 and 3 hours lessons, thrice a week, according to the academic calendar. Different and synergistic teaching methods will be adopted:
Classroom lessons, exercises, simulations, individual and group projects, reports.​​​​​​​

Assessment Methods


The final exam will consist of an oral examination. The colloquia will consist in a discussion of a project-work and/or a general oral examination.

The examination will assess all of the topics to which students will be introduced through frontal lessons and exercises. A thorough study of the recommended readings is also an integral part of the activity. The final mark will be expressed in grades out of thirties.​​​​​​​

Contents


The course "Business and Innovation" explores the fundamentals of the economics of innovation, business strategies for innovation, and supporting public policies, while integrating managerial competencies related to Project Management. The approach is multidisciplinary, combining economic, organizational, and practical perspectives.
In particular, the course will focus on the following key topics:
Technological innovation: definitions, types, and trajectories
The innovative firm: strategy, organization, and resources
Sectoral and national systems of innovation
Technology-based start-ups and innovative entrepreneurship
Innovation life cycle and risk management
Innovation support policies
Fundamentals of Project Management
