Syllabus

Course Objectives

Understand the structure of the atom, Interpret the periodic table, Describe the main types of chemical bonds, Distinguish between mixtures and solutions, Be able to calculate the concentration of a solution, Analyze acid-base reactions by applying Arrhenius and Brønsted-Lowry theories, Calculate the pH of acidic and basic solutions.

Course Prerequisites

Basic knowledge of mathematics (fundamental algebraic operations, concepts of proportions and percentages, basics of logarithms), understanding of the scientific method and fundamental physical quantities, elementary knowledge of physics, particularly regarding energy and forces, knowledge of the characteristics of different states of matter, ability to interpret tables and graphs, and the skill to synthesize complex concepts clearly.

Any "GENERAL CHEMISTRY" textbook in which the topics covered in the course are explained.

Contents

Structure of the atom, electron configuration of elements. Periodic table and periodic properties of elements.
Chemical bonding: molecules and ions; ionic bond; covalent bond; metallic bond; secondary bonds.
Mixtures and solutions. The mole and solution concentration.
Acid-base reactions: acid-base theory according to Arrhenius and Brønsted-Lowry; pH and buffer solutions.
