Syllabus

Course Objectives

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
The course aligns with the specific objectives of the degree program, aiming to train professionals capable of understanding and applying the principles of general pharmacology and the main drug classes, including mechanisms of action, therapeutic indications, and adverse effects.
Specifically, the Principles of Pharmacology course aims to provide students with:
i) knowledge of pharmacokinetics (the qualitative and quantitative analysis of drug absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion within the human body) and pharmacodynamics (drug-target interactions and dose-response relationships); ii) a solid understanding of the mechanisms underlying variability in drug response and the development of toxic effects; iii) comprehensive knowledge of the pharmacological basis of therapy, with particular emphasis on drugs used for pain management, anti-inflammatory agents, and muscle relaxants.
EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES
At the end of the course, the student will be able to: i) understand the pharmacological basis of therapy; ii) recognize drug side effects, toxic effects, and the mechanisms underlying variability in drug response.
The course will also equip students with the necessary tools to enhance their ability to collaborate within multidisciplinary teams, working alongside other healthcare professionals (physicians, psychologists, psychiatrists, etc.) in a patient-centered approach.

Course Prerequisites

As required by the course.

Teaching Methods

The course includes both traditional lectures and interactive sessions.
It aims to provide the theoretical foundations necessary for a rational understanding of the effects exerted by a drug once introduced into the human body (pharmacodynamics), while also considering its distribution and biotransformation within the body (pharmacokinetics). At the same time, special attention will be given to linking theoretical knowledge with emerging evidence from the clinical use of drugs as key components of the therapeutic arsenal.

Assessment Methods

EVALUATION METHOD
Type of Exam: The exam consists of an oral discussion lasting approximately 20-30 minutes, during which at least one question will cover topics in general pharmacology and one in special pharmacology. Questions will be asked on theoretical aspects related to the topics covered in the course and detailed in the syllabus. The purpose of the exam is to assess the student’s level of knowledge and understanding of the course content.
The assessment will also evaluate the student’s ability to express themselves with appropriate command of specialized language, as well as their ability to structure their exposition autonomously and coherently. Therefore, the evaluation will not be based solely on the level of knowledge of the exam topics but will also take into account: i) the student's logical and argumentative skills; ii) the quality of the presentation, with particular attention to the correct use of specialized terminology.
If the professor is unable to be present on the examination board, a multiple-choice questionnaire will be administered, consisting of 30 questions (with only one correct answer) plus an additional question for honors. Each correct answer will be awarded 1 point, while unanswered questions will receive 0 points. There will be no penalty for incorrect answers. The test will be considered passed if the student achieves a minimum score of 18.
To facilitate understanding of the exam format and evaluation criteria, these will be explained to students at the beginning of the course.
Module Evaluation: The final grade will be expressed on a scale of thirty.

Texts

Any additional materials will be made available by the teacher to supplement the recommended texts.

Contents

The course consists of two sections:
1) General Pharmacology: This section covers the fundamental principles underlying drug-human interactions, which are further divided into three chapters: pharmacokinetics (the effects that the body has on drugs), pharmacodynamics (the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying therapeutic, adverse, and toxic drug effects), and Drug Development and Testing. Additionally, this section addresses variability in drug response and the mechanisms responsible for adverse drug reactions.
2) Special Pharmacology: This section describes the characteristics of individual drug classes, with a particular focus on those commonly used for pain and inflammation management.
