Overview

Date/time interval

Secondo Semestre (09/02/2026 - 30/05/2026)

Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course aims to promote:
- the acquisition of knowledge and understanding of the main theoretical models of parenting (e.g., systemic, psychodynamic, behavioral, and relational models);
- the acquisition of knowledge and understanding of family dynamics in contexts of vulnerability (e.g., adoption, foster care, assisted reproductive technologies, maltreatment);
- the acquisition of knowledge and practical skills in using tools and techniques for evaluating parent-child and family interactive and relational dynamics, with particular attention to observational methodologies and the evaluation of attachment processes and parenting skills;
- the development of independent judgment in identifying risk and protective factors within the family context;
- the acquisition of communication skills regarding the observed and evaluated family dynamics, along with the ability to draft clinical reports, observational protocols, and assessment summaries;
- the acquisition of knowledge and competencies for planning and implementing preventive interventions and psychological support for parenting and families in various forms of distress.

Course Prerequisites

A solid foundational knowledge of dynamic psychology.

Teaching Methods

The course consists of 54 hours of lectures and guided practical exercises, divided into 2- and 3-hour sessions according to the academic calendar.

Assessment Methods

The exam consists of a written test designed to assess the level of learning, conceptual mastery, proper use of terminology, and the ability to interpret and analyze information related to functional and dysfunctional family dynamics, as well as the main intervention techniques. The test will be graded on a scale from 0 to 30 (with possible praise). A score between 18 and 23 indicates sufficient learning, a score between 23 and 28 indicates a good level of learning, a score between 28 and 30 indicates an excellent level of learning, and a grade of “with praise” reflects exceptional analytical and critical reasoning skills regarding the course topics.

Texts

- Simonelli A., La funzione genitoriale. Sviluppo e psicopatologia, Raffaello Cortina Editore
- Handouts provided during the lessons.

Contents

The course will explore the topic of parenting, parent-child interactions, and intra-family dynamics, particularly in situations of risk.
After an overview of the theoretical models related to this field, the main assessment tools will be presented, with a specific focus - primarily from a psychodynamic perspective - on observational techniques and methodologies developed within attachment theory.
