Syllabus

Course Objectives

At the end of the module, students will be able to:

Understand the principles of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics applied to the skin.
Describe the routes of cutaneous absorption and the function of the skin barrier.
Evaluate how physicochemical properties of active substances affect cutaneous bioavailability.
Analyze cutaneous metabolism and drug elimination pathways.
Interpret pharmacodynamic parameters and drug–receptor interactions in the skin.
Identify and classify adverse reactions to topical formulations.
Correlate skin physiological conditions with drug absorption and therapeutic outcomes.

Course Prerequisites

For an optimal understanding of the course contents, basic school education and knowledge of basic scientific subjects are required.

Teaching Methods

The course is delivered in blended mode, with 50% in-person and 50% online activities, combining TEL-DE (content delivery) and TEL-DI (interactive learning).
Students will engage in case study analysis, individual and group work, including e-tivities, aimed at applying theoretical knowledge and developing operational and professional skills.

Assessment Methods

Student assessment includes:

Ongoing assessments, useful for monitoring learning and teaching processes.
Final exam: oral examination, to be taken during one of the scheduled exam sessions.

The final grade will be assigned according to the following scale:

18–22/30: basic knowledge with some gaps;
23–25/30: fair understanding with clear exposition;
26–28/30: good mastery of the content;
29–30/30: excellent knowledge with ability to connect and contextualize topics;
30 cum laude: all questions answered correctly.

Contents

This module introduces the fundamentals of cutaneous pharmacology, focusing on pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics as applied to the skin. Students will learn how drugs are absorbed, distributed, metabolized, and eliminated through the skin, and how the skin’s physiological state affects these processes. Topics include molecular targets, pharmacodynamic effects, and both local and systemic adverse reactions.
Key topics:

Cutaneous pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics
Structure and function of the skin barrier
Routes of topical drug administration
Cutaneous metabolism and bioavailability
Adverse reactions to topical drugs

Course Language

Italian
