Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course deals with the study of drugs for cutaneous use.
EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES
Knowledge and understanding:
At the end of the Course, students will be able to:
- describe the main dermatological drugs, their mechanism of action and side effects.
Applied knowledge and understanding:
The knowledge acquired during the Course can be used by students in the workplace, in industry and in research.
Autonomy of judgment:
During the lessons, the discussion of the results of scientific publications aimed at clarifying efficacy, safety and tolerability associated with the rational use of herbal drugs will be promoted.
Communication skills:
Acquisition of clear and appropriate terminology.

Course Prerequisites

There are no prerequisite constraints. Basic knowledge of chemistry, biology, anatomy and physiology is recommended.

Teaching Methods


The teaching is structured in 24 hours in mixed mode: 50% in presence and 50% online, combining TEL-DE (didactic delivery) and TEL-DI (interactive teaching) activities. During the teaching, students will be offered individual and/or group work and case study analysis, also in the form of e-tivities, to encourage the application of theoretical content and the development of professional skills. Furthermore, the proposed exercises will allow to verify the practical application of the topics covered during the theoretical path.

Assessment Methods


The exam consists of a written test and, for those who want to improve their written grade, which must be higher than 18/30, an oral test. The topics covered in the exam will reflect those covered during the course and present in the program. The student's personal contribution, his/her work, commitment and consistency shown during the period of attendance will be evaluated. To pass the exam it will be necessary to acquire correct, clear and concise terminology, paying attention to the possible logical connections between the topics developed during the course of study.
Student assessment includes:
• Final exam: written exam, to be taken during one of the scheduled exam sessions.
The final grade will be assigned according to the following scale:
• 18–22/30: basic knowledge with some gaps;
• 23–25/30: fair understanding with clear exposition;
• 26–28/30: good mastery of the content;
• 29–30/30: excellent knowledge with ability to connect and contextualize topics;
• 30 cum laude: all questions answered correctly.

The topical medicine category includes a wide range of products dedicated to the care and treatment of various skin conditions. Topical medicines are medicines applied directly to the skin and represent a mainstay of the treatment of skin conditions.The main pharmacological classes of dermatological drugs, their mechanisms of action, therapeutic indications, methods of application and the most common adverse reactions will be analyzed.

- Antivirals;
- Keratolytics and exfoliating agents;
- Psoriasis and topical dermatitis;
- Skin regeneration and healing.
