Syllabus

Course Objectives

At the end of the module, students will be able to:

Analyze the relationship between chemical structure and physical properties of cosmetic polymers.
Identify the role of polymers in specific cosmetic applications (e.g., emulsifiers, gelling agents, conditioning agents).
Evaluate polymer effectiveness in terms of texture, stability, adhesion, and sensoriality.
Apply concepts of rheology, film formation, and active release in formulation contexts.
Compare classical and innovative polymeric materials based on their properties and functional needs.
Interpret industrial case studies on the evolution of polymers in cosmetic products.

Course Prerequisites

none

Teaching Methods

The course is delivered in blended mode, with 50% in-person and 50% online activities, combining TEL-DE (content delivery) and TEL-DI (interactive learning).
Students will engage in case study analysis, individual and group work, including e-tivities, aimed at applying theoretical knowledge and developing operational and professional skills.

Assessment Methods

Student assessment includes:

Final exam: written test with open-ended questions, to be taken during one of the scheduled exam sessions.

The final grade will be assigned according to the following scale:

18–22/30: basic knowledge with some gaps
23–25/30: fair understanding with clear exposition
26–28/30: good mastery of the content
29–30/30: excellent knowledge with ability to connect and contextualize topics
30 cum laude: all questions answered correctly

Texts

Teaching materials will be provided throughout the course.

Contents

This module explores the relationship between chemical structure and functional properties of polymeric materials used in cosmetic products. It covers traditional applications of polymers in formulations – such as emulsifiers, gelling agents, conditioning agents, and film-formers – and introduces advanced technologies involving smart polymers, sensory polymers, and controlled-release systems. Focus is also given to technological innovation and industry case studies in high-performance cosmetic applications.
Key topics:

Structure–property relationships in polymeric materials
Polymer functions in cosmetic formulations
Functional technologies: stabilization, viscosity, adhesion, hydration
Smart, sensory, and functionalized polymers
Innovation and industrial case studies
