Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course aims to provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to apply the main sample pre‑treatment methods—tailored to the type of finished cosmetic product—and instrumental techniques for analyzing ingredients used in cosmetic formulations.

Acquire theoretical and practical knowledge of analytical methods used in cosmetic ingredient analysis
Understand the classification of cosmetic ingredients: active, functional, preservatives, colorants, fragrances, and natural ingredients
Learn proper sample preparation techniques based on the type of cosmetic product
Develop the ability to choose and validate analytical procedures
Apply advanced separation techniques: liquid chromatography, gas chromatography, TLC, supercritical fluid chromatography, capillary electrophoresis
Apply advanced spectroscopic techniques: UV-Vis, and IR spectroscopy

Course Prerequisites

None

Teaching Methods

The course is delivered in a blended learning format: 50% in-person and 50% online, combining TEL‑DE (didactic delivery) and TEL‑DI (interactive teaching) methodologies. The curriculum includes case study analyses and individual deep dives to promote the practical application of theoretical content and foster the development of professional skills.

Assessment Methods

Student assessment includes:
Final exam: oral examination, to be taken during one of the scheduled exam sessions.
The final grade will be assigned according to the following scale:

18–22/30: basic knowledge with some gaps
23–25/30: fair understanding with clear exposition
26–28/30: good mastery of the content
29–30/30: excellent knowledge with ability to connect and contextualize topics
30 cum laude: all questions answered correctly

Contents

The module provides both theoretical and practical foundations in cosmetic product quality control, offering a comprehensive framework starting with consumer safety in accordance with standards set by EU Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009, continuing through post‑marketing evaluation and monitoring, and covering rigorous laboratory testing and careful management of formulation, stability, and labeling. The following topics will be addressed:

Safety evaluation: toxicological data—including in silico or QSAR models for natural ingredients and impurities—and microbial stability.

Quality control, including sensory and rheological testing (texture, viscosity), chemical analyses (X‑ray, GC‑MS, LC‑MS for allergens and contaminants), and microbiological testing under ISO 11930 standards: preservative efficacy and water activity.

Regulated ingredients quality control as listed in Annexes II–VI: substances that are banned or restricted, including preservatives, UV filters, colorants, fragrance allergens (if > 0.001–0.01%), and contaminants such as heavy metals, nitrosamines, phthalates, formaldehyde, etc.

Microbiological quality control reference: ISO 11930 (2019 revision), the standard for evaluating antimicrobial protection.

Stability and packaging quality control: accelerated tests to simulate shelf life (temperature, light, humidity), checking packaging compatibility and substance migration. Determination of PAO (Period After Opening) or expiration date, with guidelines on optimal storage conditions.

Environmental monitoring of cosmetic ingredients.
