Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course aims to provide students with an in-depth understanding of cosmetic ingredients in terms of safety, stability, and product efficacy, using instrumental methods consistent with those applied in similar modules.
 By the end of the course, students will be able to:

Apply EU regulations in the safety evaluation of cosmetics.
Perform physico-chemical analyses of ingredients and contaminants using instrumental techniques.
Manage formulations in compliance with regulatory limits.
Evaluate product stability through accelerated testing and labeling requirements (PAO, expiry).
Analyze the environmental impact of cosmetics and implement monitoring methods.

Course Prerequisites

None

Teaching Methods

The course is delivered in a blended learning format: 50% in-person and 50% online, combining TEL‑DE (didactic delivery) and TEL‑DI (interactive teaching) methodologies. The curriculum includes case study analyses and individual deep dives to promote the practical application of theoretical content and foster the development of professional skills.

Assessment Methods

Student assessment includes:
Final exam: oral examination, to be taken during one of the scheduled exam sessions.
The final grade will be assigned according to the following scale:
18–22/30: sufficient knowledge but with gaps;
23–25/30: fair knowledge, clear presentation;
26–28/30: good command of the content;
29–30/30: excellent knowledge, ability to make connections and provide context;
30 with honors: all questions answered correctly.

Contents

The module provides the theoretical and practical foundations for the analysis of cosmetic ingredients, starting from their classification and the applicable analytical techniques. Ingredients are categorized as active, functional, preservatives, colorants, fragrances, and natural substances. Understanding sample preparation methods and the application of analytical approaches is essential to identify and quantify substances in cosmetic formulations. Advanced separation and spectroscopic techniques are used.

Introduction: classification of cosmetic ingredients: active and functional ingredients, preservatives and stabilizers, colorants and fragrances, natural ingredients.
Theoretical, practical aspects and applications of analytical approaches and sample preparation for the analysis of ingredients in cosmetic formulations.
Separation techniques: liquid chromatography and gas chromatography with various detection systems, thin-layer chromatography, supercritical fluid chromatography, capillary electrophoresis.
Spectroscopic techniques: UV-Vis spectroscopy, atomic absorption and emission spectroscopy, IR spectroscopy.
