Primo Semestre (01/10/2025 - 31/01/2026)

Syllabus

Course Objectives

The expected learning outcomes aim to develop specific skills in the field of cosmetic technology, enable a thorough understanding of the physical properties of cosmetic ingredients and focus on their application in different forms of cosmetics.
At the end of the course, the student will be able to:
• Understand the physical properties of cosmetic ingredients in relation to their technological function.
• Analyse the correlation between the chemical-physical characteristics of ingredients and their stability and functionality in different cosmetic formulations.
• Describe the main cosmetic forms and how the active ingredients are incorporated.
• Apply cosmetic technology knowledge to interpret the choice of ingredients in relation to the form of administration.
• Evaluate the suitability of specific cosmetic ingredients according to the needs formulated by the product (target, efficacy, safety).

Course Prerequisites

The student has to acquire preliminary knowledge of the physical properties of materials.

Teaching Methods

The course consists of 24 h of lessons.
Teaching takes place in mixed mode, 50% in person and 50% online, combining activities of type TEL-DE (educational provision) and TEL-DI (interactive teaching). Case studies and individual and collaborative work, also in the form of e-activities, are planned to facilitate the application of theoretical content and the development of professional skills.

Assessment Methods

Learning assessment includes:
• Oral test: includes a critical discussion of the topics developed during the semester.
The final vote will be allocated according to the following scale:
• 18-22/30: sufficient knowledge but gaps;
• 23-25/30: discreet knowledge, clear exposure;
• 26-28/30: good command of content;
• 29-30/30: excellent knowledge, ability to connect and contextualize;
• 30 with honors: correct answers to all questions"

Texts

Franco Bettiol, Massimiliano Cecchi. Manuale delle preparazioni cosmetiche e dermatologiche, Tecniche Nuove, 2018.

Contents

The module addresses the physical properties of finished cosmetic products, with particular reference to the following topics:
• Physical stability of cosmetics: general principles of stability and alteration of products depending on their composition and structure;
• Cosmetic forms:
Solutions: physico-chemical properties and behaviour as a function of the solvent;
Surfactants: role in detergent properties;
Colloids: classification, rheological behaviour and formulation implications;
Geli: reticular structure, mechanical properties and cosmetic use;
 Emulsions: types (O/A, A/O), stabilization mechanisms, impacts on texture and perceived effectiveness.
