Course Objectives

The course has the educational objective of imparting to the student the fundamental notions on the main categories of cosmetic products, on the raw materials used for their preparation, on the formulation, evaluation and legislative aspects that characterize and regulate both the production and marketing of cosmetics. A further objective of the course is to make known the process that a cosmetic must follow from formulation development to marketing. Knowledge will also be provided to interpret the INCI formulas for the validity and qualities of a cosmetic, in addition to the laboratory procedures for the conception, formulation development and preparation of cosmetic products.

Teaching Methods

This course is offered in a blended learning mode, where the theoretical teaching (50%) is done online, while practical teaching (50%) is done face-to-face.

Assessment Methods

Intermediate practical laboratory exercises; development and discussion of a research project; Final practical laboratory exercise with preparation of a technical report; Possible oral exam. The final grade will be assigned according to the following scale:

18–22/30: sufficient knowledge but with gaps;

23–25/30: fair knowledge, clear presentation;

26–28/30: good command of the content;

29–30/30: excellent knowledge, ability to make connections and provide context;

30 cum laude: correct answers to all questions.

The course provides theoretical and practical skills in the design, development, characterization, and evaluation of effective and stable conventional and innovative cosmetic formulations, in compliance with current European regulations. The program includes laboratory activities for the preparation and analysis of formulations, as well as modules dedicated to small-scale production processes of cosmetic products, with the aim of transferring formulations from the laboratory bench to large-scale production
