Syllabus

Course Objectives


The course focuses on the study of the nomenclature, reactivity, and preparation of organic compounds, together with their chemical, physical, and biological properties for potential pharmaceutical applications. The ability to recognize functional groups, understand reaction mechanisms, and critically evaluate stereochemical aspects are the primary objectives of the course.
Expected learning outcomes:
Knowledge and understanding: recognize and classify functional groups in organic molecules; describe the behavior of organic species as acids, bases, nucleophiles, and electrophiles; show the main reaction mechanisms in organic chemistry;
Ability to apply knowledge and understanding: correctly name organic compounds according to IUPAC and common nomenclature; represent organic molecules using structural formulas, condensed formulas, and three-dimensional representations; complete reaction schemes by predicting reagents, products, and intermediates.
Making judgments: analyze the mechanisms of organic reactions; predict and critically discuss the stereochemical progression of organic reactions.
Communication skills: Use correctly and appropriately scientific terminology and symbols of organic chemistry.
Learning skills: Develop study and problem-solving strategies applicable to a more complex chemical and pharmaceutical context.

Course Prerequisites


Necessary knowledge for the learning of Organic Chemistry: Electronic configuration and atom structure ▪ ionic and covalent bonds ▪ molecular structures ▪ atomic orbitals and resonance structures ▪ hybrid orbitals of carbon, oxygen, and nitrogen ▪ acidity and basicity according to Brønsted-Lowry and Lewis ▪ definition of pKa. The General and Inorganic Chemistry is the mandatory exam to pass before taking Organic Chemistry.

Teaching Methods


Lessons and exercises in the classroom for a total of 108 hours, spread across 8-10 hours per week. Lessons include PowerPoint slides, tablet PCs, and word processing programs. At the end of the various topics, the teacher assigns homework, which are then graded in class with the active participation of the students.
The exercises include theoretical and practical exercises in the computer lab, in order to complement the students preparation with the use of specific software dedicated to organic chemistry and its applications. To promote a proper understanding of stereochemistry, extensive use is made of molecular models.

Assessment Methods


The exam is oral and based on both theory questions and exercises by which the students demonstrate the achievement of the fundamental objectives of the course. In particular, the nomenclature and reactivity of organic compounds, the behavior as nucleophiles and electrophiles, the mechanism of reactions and their stereochemistry, the comparison of acidity and basicity represent the main requirements for passing the exam.
