Syllabus

Course Objectives

Synthesis, physicochemical characterization and
analysis of drug delivery systems in nanotechnology
and nanomedicine. Students will learn fundamentals
for the synthesis, physicochemical characterization
and biological tests of drug delivery systems and
medical devices.
The course aims at proposing a comprehensive
view of basal procedures and assays used for the
biological evaluation of newly synthetized
compounds, nanomaterials and drug delivery.

Course Prerequisites

Pharmaceutical Technology with laboratory
Human Anatomy

Teaching Methods

Classes activities.
Individual activities. Training activities.
12 hours of lectures.

Assessment Methods

Oral discussion/presentation of topics included in
the program.
4 different questions, 2 questions for each modules
discussing the thematic issues of the program
Minimum score for the approval: 18/30.
Oral examination/presentation.

modulated by drug delivery systems.
Biopharmaceutical and technological properties of
drug delivery systems. Biomaterials in drug delivery.
Passive and active targeting. Lipid and polymeric
drug delivery systems. Nanometric implantable
devices.

Examples of drug delivery systems: Lipid drug
delivery systems (Doxil/Caelyx). Polymeric drug
delivery systems (Abraxane). Nanochannel
biomedical devices (nDS).
Cell organization and communication.
In vitro cell culture models: primary cell cultures,
normal and cancer cell lines.
In vitro metabolic activity and cytotoxicity assays.
Study of the intracellular trafficking in response to
different pharmaceutical systems by means of flow
cytometry, fluorescence microscopy, transmission
and scanning electron microscopy, atomic force
microscopy.
