Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course aims to provide the student with the tools to understand the etiology, pathophysiology and clinical classification of the main minor disorders that can be addressed in the professional practice of the pharmacist and treatable with drugs and self-medication devices (OTC and SOP). Specifically, dermatological, central nervous system (headaches), digestive, musculoskeletal, dermatological disorders and colds (flu and nasal congestion) are explored in depth.
During the lessons there will be an intense and continuous use of databases for scientific research in order to stimulate the use of the PC for the creation of a paper.

Course Prerequisites

To fully understand the topics covered, as well as General Pathology, the student must have good basic knowledge acquired in the courses of Human Anatomy, Biology, Microbiology and General Physiology. Where appropriate, notes on General Pathology, are referred to in class to facilitate understanding of the course topics.

Teaching Methods

Traditional teaching method through frontal and classroom exercises and teaching laboratories. Teaching support activities, seminars and learning tests are planned.

Assessment Methods

For the Self-medication diseases module, the final exam consists of an oral test during which the student is asked questions on specific topics among those described in the teaching program. The final evaluation is carried out on the basis of the precision and level of depth with which the student replies to the questions asked, also in relation to the expected learning.

Contents

Management of diseases with self-medication drugs and devices: definitions.
Etiology, pathophysiology and clinical classification of the main diseases managed with self-medication drugs: skin affections, headache, disorders of the gastrointestinal tract, joint and muscle pain, gastralgia, cooling/flu diseases.
