Overview

Date/time interval

Secondo Semestre (01/03/2025 - 15/06/2025)

Syllabus

Course Objectives

The objective of the discipline is to deepen and understand the mechanisms that regulate the relationship between toxic substances / drugs and the organism, mechanism of action and organ toxicity of different toxic substances and / or drugs through monitoring of hemoconcentrations and with particular attention to new methods of analysis. The course provides the necessary knowledge for the determination of the toxicological aspects of the active ingredients both in the animal model and in alternative in vitro methods, required for registration purposes and for the assessment of exposure risk.

Course Prerequisites

In addition to Pharmacology and Pharmacotherapy, the student, in order to fully understand the topics covered and in order to optimally achieve the training objectives, must also have in-depth knowledge of: the etiological bases and pathogenetic mechanisms of diseases; the fundamental aspects of the functions of the main organs and systems; the basis of biology and microbiology in host-infectious or tumor-agent interactions. Students must have chemical knowledge (general, organic and analytical) and chemical balances in order to be able to calculate effective and toxic concentrations of xenobiotics in medicines and, subsequently, in body fluids and tissues.

Teaching Methods

Traditional didactic method through frontal or telematic lessons and classroom exercises and didactic laboratories. Teaching support activities, seminars and learning checks are planned. Furthermore, through the use of databases with access to scientific articles, it will be possible to use information not yet available in the most recent treaties to prepare papers that will help prepare students to better deal with the commitment of developing the graduation thesis.

Assessment Methods

The exam consists of an oral examination with an exposition of an elaborate typescript on specific issues addressed during the course, taking advantage of an exposure through slides. Further competences will be acquired through the use of scientific databases and articles making use of current information not yet available even in the most recent treaties, helping to prepare students to better face the task of developing the thesis.

Contents

Allow the student to deepen and understand the techniques of pharmacological investigation applied in the phase of research and development of drugs (functional studies, binding, biochemical, holistic and reductionist tests) and to develop the ability to use the acquired knowledge. At the end of the course the student will be able to propose the experimental approaches to be adopted in the characterization of drugs or xenobiotics and to correctly interpret, critically, the results of experiments and studies on scientific articles for the preparation of reports and exposures for the future preparation for the discussion of the degree thesis.
