Course Objectives


Objectives:
1) Become familiar with concepts of literary genre and reception.
2) Recognize the most important poetic forms, rhetoric figures and concepts of rhythm.
3) familiarizing with the notion of intertextuality
4) approaching literary history from an unusual intertextual angle
5) stimulating textual analysis with attention to distinctions of genre.

Course Prerequisites

Students will be familiar with the basic notions of Italian literary history

Teaching Methods

Power-point assisted Lectures; seminars, occasionally conducted by specialist guest speakers

Assessment Methods


Students will take an oral exam, conversing on the topics dealt with in class and listed in this syllabus. They will be asked 6-7 questions meant to assess their ability to express themselves correctly, and their knowledge of the historical context, the socio-cultural issues, as well as the stylistic and thematic peculiarities of the authors’ works. Their ability to understand and conduct a critical analysis of the literary texts listed in this syllabus will be also assessed.
The final score will be from 0 to 30. Students will pass the exam with a sufficient score if they show a basic knowledge of the topics; they will get an excellent score if they show a very good knowledge of the topics and an ability to develop an in-depth analysis and a critical discourse on them.

Ugo Foscolo, Ultime lettere di Jacopo Ortis (primo cap.) e due sonetti;
Giacomo Leopardi, All’Italia e L’infinito,
Alessandro Manzoni, Coro di Ermengarda e primo capitolo dei Promessi sposi.

Italian Literature in the Romantic Age: At the Dawn of a New World

This course will examine the various Romantic theories and the specific features of Italian Romanticism in comparison with its counterparts across Europe. Particular attention will be given to aesthetics, poetics, and selected texts by different authors, analyzing their formal and ideological characteristics in light of historical events as well as contemporary philosophical and scientific theories. Readings will include works by Foscolo, Leopardi, and Manzoni, alongside other authors, approached from a comparative and philological perspective. The aim is to highlight the distinctive traits of Romantic writings and to refine the principal tools of literary criticism.
