Course Objectives


At the end of the course, students will be able to:
-recognize and describe the main periods and phenomena of modern and contemporary Chinese literature;
-situate authors and works within their respective historical, cultural, and social contexts;
-critically analyze texts of different types (essays, short stories, poems) using appropriate terminology.

None.

Teaching Methods


Frontal and interactive lectures, with the active participation of students. Reading and analysis of literary passages in class.

Contents


The course aimsat exploring the major literary phenomena and Chinese authors from the late Qing period, at the end of the nineteenth century, to the present day, examining literary production in relation to the historical, political, cultural, and social contexts that have shaped it. Particular attention will be given to the transition towards modern literature, the vibrant literary scene of the 1920s and 1930s, the revolutionary literature of the Maoist period, and the literary expressions of contemporary China from the 1980s onward. The course will cover all the main genres — fiction, poetry, and drama — analyzing their formal and thematic evolution in relation to the transformations of Chinese society.
