Syllabus

Course Objectives


The course aims to provide: 1) a brief socio-cultural overview of the contemporary “Arab world”, and of the main debates relating to the problematic Eurocentric approaches towards this concept in a decolonial perspective ; 2) an insight into the phenomenon of Islamic feminism and an overview of the relevant literature concerning this topic. ​​​​​​​

Course Prerequisites


A basic knowledge of Arabic ​​​​​​​

Teaching Methods


Taught course. The lecture will make use of multimedia resources and digital contents. Students are encouraged to actively participate in the lessons. The curriculum includes readings in Arabic relating to the topics covered during the course.

Assessment Methods


Oral exam. Preparing presentations on specific issues may be required by the lecturer for the final evaluation.
The evaluation will be up to 30 points. ​​​​​​​

Additional Arabic-language, as well as English-language, materials will be presented during the lectures.

Contents


The course provides an overview on the contemporary Arab world, as well as on Arab culture in its various aspects, offering the tools to comprehend the main dynamics and topical issues surrounding this region. The first part of the course (first module) focuses on the geo-demographic and socio-cultural dimension of the Arab countries. This part intends to highlight the complexities and peculiarities of the Arab context, examining both commonalities and distinctive features within the “Arab-majority” region. The second part of the course (second module) presents an introduction to Islamic feminism and the major debates developing within/concerning this political and cultural phenomenon. ​​​​​​​
