Course Objectives


The course aims to provide students with a solid knowledge of American culture, discussed and analyzed through a selection of particularly representative historical and literary texts.

Course Prerequisites


Advanced knowledge of the English Language.

Teaching Methods


Regular classes and class presentations.

Assessment Methods


The final oral exam will be in English. It will consist of a number of questions (from 3 to 5) on the historical and literary texts, and on the socio-cultural issues included in the extended syllabus (see following section).The exam will assess the following abilities: detailed knowledge of the historical and literary texts, especially in their connection with the social and cultural issues characterizing the American context; knowledge of the main developments in the social and cultural history of the United States; ability to elaborate personal insights into the texts, contexts, and topics included in the syllabus.The grading scale goes from 1 to 30 cum laude (excellent). The exam will be evaluated by attributing an excellent score if students will show a detailed knowledge and ability to discuss the historical and literary texts, and to discuss the cultural issues characterizing the American context.The exam will be evaluated by attributing a sufficient score if students will show an overall knowledge of the historical and literary works, along with the related topics and contextual features.
