Course Objectives

Knowledge of the main theoretical trends and of the mechanisms of language change; ability to apply the methodological tools learnt to the analysis of study cases taken from the main European languages.

Course Prerequisites

Having taken a General Linguistics and/or a Historical Linguistics exam during the three-year degree course is required. If necessary, a module to make up for basic notions of Historical Linguistics can be organized.

Teaching Methods

Taught classes together with practice drills and seminars aimed not only at theoretical in-depth analysis of the issues dealt with in class, but also at debate and comment on change phenomena taken from those languages that students are familiar with.

Given the technical quality of the topics, attendance is strongly recommended.

Assessment Methods

Final oral test. Drafting of a short written essay on the issues dealt with during the course, which will be evaluated as a mid-term test to be presented at the final exam.
