Syllabus
Course Objectives
By the end of the course, students should have acquired:
- the oral and written production and comprehension skills required at level C1;
- an awareness of the main grammatical issues related to level C1, from a metalinguistic perspective;
- skills in the use of various computer-assisted/automatic translation tools;
- the ability to understand, analyze, and translate legal texts in the field of commercial law;
- the ability to critically assess the potential and limits of translation technologies and artificial intelligence, and their impact on professional practices;
- the ability to understand, analyze, and translate texts in the medical field;
Course Prerequisites
In order to access this class, students need to have oral and written comprehension and production skills corresponding to Level B2 of CEFR for Spanish.
Teaching Methods
The course consists of: (a) classes held by the instructor(s); (b) practical sessions held by the lector(s).
The classes offered by the instructor(s) are both lectures (aimed at providing the necessary theoretical background) and seminars (with students' active participation).
The practical sessions with the lector(s) are highly interactive and are necessary to acquire the language skills needed to successfully complete the final exam.
For these reasons, attendance of both the instructors' and lectors' classes is strongly recommended.
Assessment Methods
EXAM
Final assessment consists of a written and an oral exam, which cover the syllabus of both the main course and the lectors’ sessions.
Written and oral exams can be sat in different sessions (summer, fall, winter). Students access the oral exam only after passing the written exam. Both parts will need to be passed before the winter session (January/February 2027) in order to officially register the final result. The written exam is valid until the winter session (January/February 2027).
WRITTEN EXAM
The written exam comprises:
- Level C1 reading comprehension and writing exercises (practiced in the lectors’ sessions);
- Reading comprehension and written production exercises at C1 level;
- Analysis and translation (with the use of translation technologies) of fragments of legal texts in the field of commercial law (Module 1);
- Exercises on the use of translation technologies (Module 1);
- Analysis and translation of fragments of medical texts (Module 2).
ORAL EXAM
The oral exam is only accessed after successful completion of the written exam.
The oral exam will aim to verify, through a conversation between the course convenors, the lector(s), and the student:
- the acquisition of oral skills at level C1;
- the student's comprehension and ability to discuss the content of 3 of the non-fiction books listed in the Readings list.

Contents
The course, aimed at achieving level C1 of the CEFR and the metalinguistic knowledge associated with this level, is divided into two modules:
MODULE 1 (Prof.ssa S. Piccioni): NEW TECHNOLOGIES APPLIED TO THE ANALYSIS AND TRANSLATION OF LEGAL TEXTS
This module introduces students to the use of various language technologies for the analysis and translation of commercial legal texts, with particular focus on company bylaws.
The analysis, documentation, and translation tools under consideration cover the continuum from machine-aided human translation (dictionaries, glossaries, terminological databases, corpora, translation memories) to human-aided machine translation, with special emphasis on machine translation post-editing and the use of artificial intelligence for translation purposes.
In addition to developing practical skills in the use of these tools, the module also encourages critical reflection on the potential and limitations of new technologies.
