Course Objectives


This course contributes to the educational objective of the Master's Degree program in "Foreign Languages for Business and International Cooperation." It provides students with the theoretical and practical tools for subtitling, consecutive interpreting, and Business English. This prepares them for a variety of career paths:

employment with Italian and foreign companies
working as high-level interpreters and translators for private firms, state entities, and ministries
becoming a conference interpreter

LEARNING OUTCOMES
At the end of the course students will be expected to have:
- acquired the ability to describe and apply such subtitling strategies as condensation, segmentation and translation of culture-bound words;
- acquired the skills to use the basic principles of note-taking;
- acquired the ability to translate the main business documents from English into Italian and from Italian into English.
Making judgements
At the end of the course students will be expected to have:
- acquired the ability to connect theoretical and practical issues in translation and interpreting studies;
- acquired the ability to explain subtitling and note-taking strategies;
- acquired the ability to make judgements on linguistic varieties of Business English Communication skills
At the end of the course students will be able to:
- discuss different inter- and intralinguistic subtiling strategies ;
-provide technincal and practical information about interpreting and subtitling both to specialists and non-specialists;
- use business jargon and style.

Teaching Methods


The course consists of 60 hours of classroom instruction, divided into 2-hour lectures according to the academic calendar. These sessions include theoretical lectures and seminars on subtitling, note-taking, and Business English. During the course, students will engage in practical activities like subtitling, note-taking, and translating business texts between English and Italian. These activities will allow them to apply the theoretical concepts taught in class. While attendance is not mandatory, it is highly recommended. The final written exam will be the same for all students, regardless of whether they attended classes or not.

Assessment Methods


Summary of the Evaluation Process


Final Grade Calculation: The final grade is an average of the three grades from the written exam (language part and two translations) and the grade from the oral exam.

Written Exam: To pass the written exam and be eligible for the oral exam, a student must achieve a minimum score of 18/30 on all individual components. If a student fails a part, they only need to retake that specific part.

Oral Exam: This part of the exam is conducted in English and covers audiovisual translation, conference interpreting note-taking, and Business English.


Note-taking skills are specifically tested by having students listen to a 20-30 second audio clip on a business topic, which they then interpret using their notes.


Passing Criteria: To pass the entire exam, students must demonstrate a clear and logical understanding of the subject matter, effectively using specialized terminology and expressing themselves in a coherent manner.

Language Proficiency: Attending the CEL exercises is highly recommended to reach the language levels set by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). The results of a separate language assessment (administered by the CLA) will also be considered by the professor when determining the final grade.

Contents


The course aims to provide theoretical and practical knowledge related to subtitling and note-taking for consecutive interpreting, which can facilitate international cooperation in specialised fields. As professionalising and intercultural research activities, audiovisual and interpreting practices are able to develop students' linguistic skills and abilities in an increasingly globalized world. The second part of the course will also be dedicated to teaching Business English, corpora, and translation, introducing the textual typologies and contexts of Business English that will be analyzed through specialized corpora. With the help of monolingual and bilingual corpora, students will be able to translate the main types of commercial correspondence from English to Italian and from Italian to English.
