Syllabus

Course Objectives


By the end of the course, students will be able to:
Understand and define the concept of biodiversity, distinguishing it from related notions such as ecology, wilderness, and nature conservation.
Critically analyze major international conventions and global strategies for biodiversity conservation.
Interpret and assess the European Union’s legal and institutional framework on biodiversity, with particular attention to the Habitats Directive, the Natura 2000 Network, and the Nature Restoration Law.
Apply legal and governance tools for biodiversity protection, such as protected areas, species action plans, and environmental impact assessments.
Examine the integration of biodiversity into sectoral policies (agriculture, urban planning, energy) and sustainable development strategies.
Develop a systemic understanding of the challenges and opportunities related to biodiversity in both European and global contexts.

Course Prerequisites


A basic knowledge of fundamental notions about public law and EU law is recommended.

Teaching Methods


The teaching is articulated in 32 hours of lectures and 16 hours of tutorials based on readings and Q&C sessions on appropriately selected cases. The e-learning platform (Moodle) will be used both for supplementing teaching material and tracking student progress.

Assessment Methods


The exam is structured in two parts:
1. Written Exam (60%)

Open-ended questions on key concepts, legal instruments, and European strategies.
Multiple choice questionnaire or case study analysis: critical evaluation of a policy or project with an impact on biodiversity.

2. Individual or Group Project (40%)

Development of a legal, strategic, or project-based proposal for biodiversity protection.
Oral presentation with visual support (slides, infographic, etc.).

This course explores the concept of biodiversity and its fundamental role in human well-being, ecological balance, and environmental sustainability. Through an interdisciplinary approach, it examines the evolution of conservation strategies at the global level and the European legal and institutional framework, with particular attention to European Union policies, legal instruments, and governance practices. The course delves into the connections between biodiversity and key sectors such as agriculture, urban planning, energy, and integrated environmental policies, with a focus on the European Green Deal and the Nature Restoration Law.
