Course Objectives

This course aims to develop the students’ language, communicative, cultural, analytical and critical skills at B1 level of the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference). More specifically, in line with the CEFR learning objectives, by the end of this course, students will be able to:
-Follow interviews with and presentations by authors, publishers, literary agents and festival organisers (oral comprehension);
-Demonstrate knowledge of English phonetics, phonology, semantics and pragmatics;
-Apply skills in critical analyses of both literary and non-literary texts;
-Discuss the development of the English language through time;
-Examine and discuss global issues (such as multiculturalism, the environmental emergency, gender equality) through a range of literary texts, essays, and news articles (oral production);
-Produce short pieces of writing such as social media and blog posts, as well as short online book reviews by using an appropriate register (written production).

Course Prerequisites

In order to make the most of the course classes, students should have prior knowledge of English at A2 level of the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) at least.

Teaching Methods

This course will consist of interactive classes during which students will be introduced to the main concepts of English linguistics and will be invited to take part in discussions as well as group activities aimed at enhancing their reading and listening comprehension, critical, analytical, writing, and speaking skills.

The course includes the following activities:
1) Lectures held by the course lecturers.
2) Teaching activities organised by the CEL of the University Language Centre (Jennifer Barbacane, Sandra Cicchitti, Mario Milione and Daniela Nasuti), based on the four skills (listening, writing, speaking, reading) at the B1 level.
It is highly recommended to attend the CEL classes in order to achieve the language proficiency levels set by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). The final exams with the CEL (both written and oral) will take place concurrently with the language exams held by the course lecturers. All information regarding class schedules, exam procedures, and CEL office hours can be found on the University Language Centre’s website.

Assessment Methods

The final exam will consist of a written test, which students must pass before taking the oral exam. Both parts will be entirely in English and are aimed at assessing the students’ English language competence, cultural awareness, critical, analytical and communicative skills as well as their knowledge of English linguistics and the history of the English language. The written exam for the English Language and Linguistics I course will be held on the same day as the lettorato written exam. The same exam format will be used for attending and non-attending students. The written exam will be held only once within each of the three exam sessions (summer, autumn, and the extra one), while the oral exam will take place twice within each session. The oral exam for the English Language and Linguistics I course will be held on the same day as the lettorato oral exam. Further information on the exam will be provided in due course and will be made available on the course Moodle site.

Contents

This course will introduce students to different areas within English linguistics, thus enabling them to apply their knowledge to the analysis of the language of literary texts, news articles, and essays. More specifically, the course will be divided into two modules:
Module 1: (Dr Maria Cristina Seccia): Exploring English morphology and syntax
Within this module, students will analyse literary texts at morphological and syntactical levels. The themes explored in the set literary texts will also be used as a starting point to discuss topical issues such as multiculturalism and gender equality.
Module 2 (Prof. Emanuela Ettorre): Comprehending English: From Sound to Meaning
Within the second module, students will analyse texts belonging to different genres, including literature, essays, news articles and political speeches, with a focus on English phonetics, phonology, semantics, and pragmatics. In addition, students will be invited to think about English from a diachronic perspective, thus reflecting on how the language has developed through time.
