Course Objectives


Knoledge and skills:

1. the concept of the archival document: its value and the archival bond;
2. phases of archive life and archival finding aids, analogical and on line;
3. methods of production, conservation and inventorying of documents of medieval, modern and contemporary age;
4. to expound critically the technical and historical issues addressed during the course;
5. learning methodology interdisciplinary.

Course Prerequisites


understanding and presentation skills (medium level); general knowledge of modern and contemporary history

Teaching Methods


Lectures in the classroom. seminars on specific topics and educational visits in Archives in Chieti are also planned.

Assessment Methods


The exam will consist of an oral test chiecking the following aspects:

knowledge of the topics covered in the course and compulsory literature;
ability of treating them with appropriate language;
ability to provide analyses and proposals for intervention on a new hypothesized issue;
ability to autonomously find ways to deepen or expand the knowledge acquired.

The attainment of full and critical competence in the topics addressed and mastery of the specific language will be assessed with very good, very good and excellent marks (27-30 honours). A mnemonic or not well matured knowledge of the subject and the use of correct but not always appropriate language will be assessed with medium to good marks (23-26). Minimal knowledge of the subject matter and sometimes inappropriate language will result in barely sufficient marks (18-22). Where serious gaps emerge, the result of the examination will be graded insufficient (<18/30).

2. Archives: definition, function and legislation.
3. The history of archives.
4. The concept of the archive: the archival bond and the relationship between creator and archive.
5. Phases of archive life.
6. Current records and semi-current records: characteristics and management tools.
7. Records appraisal for preservation and disposal.
8. Arrangement, description and inventory.
9. Archival finding aids: lists, inventories and guides.
10. Introduction to archive management technic with practical classes.
11. Basics of archive conservation and use.
12. Educational use of source and methods of archival research.
13. Visits to various types of archives in Chieti.
14. Workshop activity.

The course presents and discusses the history, the theoretical principles, the fundamentals of the technical procedures of archival science. On the basis of these assumptions will be illustrated the methods of production, conservation and inventorying of documents of medieval, modern and contemporary age.
