Course Objectives

The course aims to provide basic mathematical calculation tools for economic, statistical, and financial applications. EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES In relation to the general objectives that the Study Course aims to achieve, the teaching aims to impart the following theoretical skills and knowledge: - definitions related to vectors and matrices; - analytical study of real functions of a real variable; - calculation of the integral of a function. Through the introduction of these theoretical concepts, the teaching aims to provide basic tools to be used in the following application areas: - algebraic operations with vectors and matrices; - graphical representation of a function; - calculation of the area under the graph of a function. Regarding communication skills, the teaching promotes the learning of mathematical language and the development of multidisciplinary communication skills.

Course Prerequisites

It is required that the students know the following topics, which are part of the math program of high schools: algebraic symbolic calculus, 1st and 2nd order equations and inequalities, radicals, equation of the straight line.

Teaching Methods

The course consists of 64 hours of classroom teaching, divided into 2-hour lessons. Classroom teaching comprises theoretical lessons and exercises. Attendance is optional but strongly recommended.

Assessment Methods

The first written test consists of exercises.
The evaluation of the first written test is out of thirty, with a maximum score of 26, and it is necessary to obtain at least 12 to proceed to the second written test.
The second written test consists of theoretical questions (definitions, theorems, proofs, and counterexamples). The evaluation of the second written test is out of thirty, with a maximum score of 6, and it is necessary to obtain at least 2 to proceed with the exam.
The final grade is calculated as the arithmetic sum of the evaluations of the two written tests. There are two cases: - the grade is less than 18: in this case, the result is insufficient; - the grade is 18 or higher: in this case, the result is sufficient.
The exam is the same for both attending and non-attending students.
