Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course provides an introduction to the systemic concept for the design of technological elements.
The learning objectives are as follows:
The objective of this module is to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the various construction materials employed in the field of architecture. In addition, students will gain insight into the physical and mechanical properties of these materials.
The course will provide an initial introduction to the basic principles of construction, including construction methods, assembly techniques, structural systems and thermal and acoustic insulation techniques.
Sustainability: The course will enable students to gain an understanding of the sustainability concepts that underpin the supply chains and energy efficiency in the choice and use of construction materials.
Practical Application: The opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge to practical situations through the workshop definition of construction elements.
Regulations and Codes: Become familiar with the local and international regulations and building codes that pertain to the utilisation of building materials.

Course Prerequisites

no prerequisite

Teaching Methods

The teaching methods used to achieve the educational objectives include lectures, seminars, classroom exercises and review lessons. These methods aim to promote the acquisition and application of knowledge about the construction aspects of architecture. When applying this knowledge, freehand drawing and model making are prioritised. The site visit, scheduled towards the end of the course, helps define and establish operating methods relating to the materials and technologies studied in the classroom.In-depth seminars supplement the knowledge provided in lectures by presenting the characteristics of current production methods for the main building materials, such as bricks, concrete, steel, wood, glass, ceramics, stone, straw, hemp and earth, as well as new materials and technologies.Practical exercises explore topics covered in lectures in greater depth, studying technological solutions adopted in case studies and carrying out small design simulations.By the end of the course, students should have gained an understanding of building materials, construction elements and techniques, which is fundamental to grasping the relationship between architectural design and construction. The course is coordinated (residential theme) with the courses of Geometria descrittiva, Storia dell'architettura 1, Composizione architettonica 1. As far as Composizione 1 is concerned, synergy is implemented for the choice of techniques and materials to be used in the design task.

Assessment Methods

Learning assessment will be based on the following methods:
- compulsory mid-semester exemption (first week of April).
- a discussion on the in-depth analysis of materials and construction technologies used in projects chosen by the students.
- an interview on topics covered in lectures and annual seminars, and a discussion of graphic projects produced during the year.

Contents

The 'Materials and Constructive Elements' course provides training that is designed toThe course will enable students to gain an understanding of the various materials and constructive procedures available to them. They will learn to identify and utilise a range of construction materials and techniques in a conscious manner. This will include an appreciation of the physical and mechanical properties of materials and how these influence their practical application. The course will also examine the impact of technological choices on the expressive and symbolic values of architecture. This will include an analysis of how materials and construction techniques can be used to create specific architectural forms. The course is divided into two teaching modules.Module 1: Building System and Environmental and Technological ComponentsThis module introduces students to the concept of the building system and its environmental and technological components. Students will learn to describe the various parts of the building organism and the relationships between them. This includes analysing the requirements for different parts of the building, such as foundations, structures, closures and partitions.Module 2 - Knowledge of building materials: This module is dedicated to the knowledge of building materials and their correct use in the construction of the building organism. Students will learn to describe materials, semi-finished products and components, including their basic physical characteristics and their ability to meet the requirements for different possible uses. This includes the description of innovative materials and the development of associated production processes.
