Syllabus

Course Objectives

Understanding the potential of perinatal tissues and stem cells derived from them, health professionals of the master's course in the specific roles of nurses and midwives, will be able to contribute to the collection of such tissues thus making them available for studies in the field of regenerative medicine.Educate to the "critical method" and discussion through the description of experiments. Furthermore, this course has the following objectives:
Provide an in-depth understanding of the role of the placenta in fetal development.Analyze the epigenetic mechanisms involved in gene regulation during placental development.Highlight the link between intrauterine environment, epigenetics and developmental programming.

Course Prerequisites

As academic requirement

Teaching Methods

Frontal lessons stimulating interactivity through classroom discussion of the topics addressed.

Assessment Methods

The student's assessment includes an oral test, which will serve to demonstrate the student's knowledge of the syllabus and the logic followed in solving the questions posed. A pass mark will be awarded on completion.

Contents

The course describes the potential role of perinatal tissues, such as amniotic fluid, amniotic membrane and umbilical cord, and stem cells derived from them in regenerative medicine. In fact, in recent years particular attention has been paid to the use of perinatal appendages and their derivatives (cells and tissues) in regenerative medicine, as postpartum waste material free of ethical issues, with important anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory and differentiative properties.
Furthermore, the course highlights the importance of the placenta during development. The placenta is not only an organ of exchange between mother and fetus, but also a fundamental regulator of fetal development. Through complex epigenetic mechanisms, it responds to maternal environmental stimuli that can influence gene expression and program the future health of the individual. Understanding these mechanisms is crucial to develop preventive strategies and improve perinatal outcomes.
