Syllabus

Course Objectives


This course aims to consolidate and improve the students’ language skills, consistent with the B2-advanced level of the Common European Framework of Reference, reading, analysing and discussing a wide range of texts, in a variety of registers and of varying difficulty levels. A revision of grammar structures is also part of the course, with a focus on EAP/ESP. Emphasis will be placed on reading and speaking skills, focusing on the students’ main areas of interest.
At the end of the course, students will be able to understand a wide variety of texts focusing on their chief areas of interest and study, identifying main lexico-grammar elements while using the most suitable reading strategies according to text type, register and level of complexity. Furthermore, by the end of the course, they will have improved their speaking skills, their ability to identify and discuss the key topics of a wide range of texts, and to articulate personal opinions on the same topics.

Course Prerequisites


Students are expected to possess a level of competence in English corresponding to the B1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference.

Teaching Methods


Lectures and activities, with audio-visual materials. The lessons will also include reading activities, guided text analyses, and discussions, individually as well as in small groups, and a variety of activities aimed at improving language skills.

Assessment Methods


Oral examination. Students will discuss some of the main topics of the course, also using the articles and texts analysed and discussed in class (see fad.unich, for both attending and non-attending students). Students will be required to use the reading strategies and suitable lexico-grammatical structures learned during the course.

Garzone, G., W. Giordano, Communicating Business in English (Pearson 2020);

articles (from magazines, scientific journals and websites) and other teaching materials will be provided during the course and uploaded to the fad.unich platform, course page.

Contents


GE (General English), ESP (English for Specific Purposes), EAP (English for Academic Purposes). 4 language skills, with an emphasis on the students’ main areas of interest and study.
