Secondo Semestre (11/02/2026 - 18/05/2026)

Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course aims to provide students with the advanced mathematical tools necessary to analyze multidimensional economic models, both in static and dynamic settings. The skills acquired on multivariable functions and optimization techniques will enable students to critically tackle complex decision-making problems in economics and finance. The introduction to differential equations lays the groundwork for dynamic system analysis.

Course Prerequisites

Knowledge of single-variable functions, derivatives and integrals. Matrices, determinants, and linear systems. Basic elements of logic and algebra.

Teaching Methods

Teaching will include the following activities:- In presence teaching;- In presence exercise sessions- material for in-depth study available on the course webpage.

Assessment Methods

The exam includes an intermediate written test, a final written test andan oral test. The details will be published before at the begininning of the course.

Contents

The course introduces advanced mathematical tools fundamental for economic and financial analysis. It covers real functions of several real variables, partial derivatives, gradients, directional derivatives, and the Hessian matrix. Particular attention is given to constrained and unconstrained optimization methods, with applications to economic problems. Finally, some basic concepts of ordinary differential equations are introduced, useful for modeling dynamic phenomena. The lectures are supported by practical examples in the economic and financial context.
