Course Objectives

The course aims to provide students with the basic tools of economic analysis, useful for understanding the world around them and for explaining the historical evolution of our socio-economic system. By the end of the course, students will be able to:

understand the main elements of microeconomic analysis and selected macroeconomic concepts;
apply fundamental economic concepts such as incentives, strategic interactions, and market failures;
understand the impact of economic decisions through simple models;
interpret the use of economic indicators and, more generally, quantitative economic evidence;
critically analyse some of the major contemporary economic issues (inequality, globalisation, unemployment, financial bubbles, technological innovation);
identify and assess the implications of selected economic policy options.

Course Prerequisites

The course does not require specific prerequisites but students’ active participation is strongly encouraged.

Teaching Methods

Lectures, along with classroom exercises, economic experiments and group discussions.

Assessment Methods

Achievement of learning objectives is tested through a written exam. The oral exam can take place at the request of the course instructor, to better evaluate the results of the written examination, or at the request of the student, to improve the final mark. The written test includes multiple choice questions, open questions and eventually simple exercises. Overall, the test aims at checking the acquisition of the entire set of competences indicated in the above-described learning objectives. In particular: the ability to interpret descriptive data referred to the socio-economic context, also in a historical perspective, the ability to critically interpret micro-economic phenomena, and the ability to understand and manipulate simple models.

Contents

The course introduces students to the logic of economic reasoning and the main analytical tools for understanding the interactions between individual choices, institutional mechanisms, and collective well-being. It adopts an inductive approach: starting from concrete, historical, and contemporary problems, illustrated with quantitative data, students are guided to recognize how the essential concepts and models of economics help interpret and analyse the phenomena under consideration. Compared to a traditional course, the emphasis is placed on developing critical and interpretative skills and on acquiring an overarching view of the economic method, without aiming to systematically cover all the canonical topics of the discipline and with a limited use of mathematical tools. Deeper thematic and methodological insights are entrusted to subsequent courses in Microeconomics and Macroeconomics.
