Contents

Political geography is a specialized branch of human geography, with lines of research that range from the theoretical foundations of the discipline to the geopolitical and geoeconomic dynamics at local and global scales and their intersection with national and supranational systems, history, culture, social behaviours and models of political organization. After a broad introductory section focused on the main aspects of human geography and its doctrinal evolution (territory, region, landscape, research methodologies and themes, regional planning), the course will deal with the doctrinal bases and specific themes of political geography (the State in all its implications, anomalous political entities, land and maritime borders, concept of nation, enclaves and exclaves, capital cities and urban networks, electoral geography) and its connections with complementary disciplines (geopolitics, geoeconomics, financial geography, geography of networks and transport, international trade geography). We will then address some case studies relating to contemporary geopolitical and geoeconomic contexts.
